Q&A with Vivian (Author)

Why did you choose to write children's books?

I didn't really choose to be a writer. I was an actor and a story teller, and got into writing by accident.

What is your earliest childhood memory?

Being out in the garden under an apple tree that was covered in blossom – I think I must have been in my pram!

If you could be any animal what would it be and why?

I'd be a giraffe. They're strange and mysterious, and they don't make loud noises or attack other animals. You know those odd little furry horns they have? I'm sure they're in touch with other planets.

What is your dream holiday destination?

Home. Is that boring? It's just that I travel a lot, and I LOVE being at home in Edinburgh. If I can't say home I'll say Italy. Bologna's good. But I don't terribly like holidays ... I always take my computer (or a notebook and pencil) with me.

If you could have one special talent what would it be?

I play the mouth organ, and I'd love to be really good at it.

Did you enjoy school? What subject did you enjoy most?

I hated school. I got bullied quite a lot, and I was scared of most of the teachers. And I was USELESS at PE and games. I liked art best.

What is your favourite film and why?

The Princess Bride. It's just the best fairy story ever. Fire swamps, giants, magicians – and it's very funny as well.

Which place / sight would you like to see most?

I'd like to walk along the Great Wall of China.

What was your favourite book as a child?

The Dawnchild, by Beryl Irving. It belonged to my mother, and it was weird and wonderful.

What makes you happy?

Being up to date with my writing, and having time to sit in front of the fire and read.

Who was your favourite author/illustrator as a child?

My favourite illustrator was Arthur Rackham. He illustrated my copy of Peter Pan, and I LOVED the picture of a chrysanthemum saying, 'Hoity toity!'

Are your characters ever based on people you know?

Oh yes. Especially my younger brother.

How do you get your ideas? Are they ever based on real life experiences?

They're often based on bits of real life experiences, or a real life experience gives me an idea and I change it round. Usually ideas come from a collection of things all mixed up...
